Too little Janet & too much Madonna for Michael Jackson at 2009 MTV VMA’s
After much ado, Janet Jackson’s tribute to her late brother Michael amounted to too few greatest hits, too much Madonna.
Madge kicked off the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards with a tale of how she and Michael had a pleasant dinner; more to the point were her repeated assertions that Michael never had a childhood, and that her was a king. It was nice, but not at all illuminating. I’d much rather have heard again Rev. Al Sharpton’s speech from Jackson’s funeral.
The following dance medley began with “Thriller” — yeah, they finally went there, followed by “Bad” and “Smooth Criminal.” (Way to not fully lean, dancer-dude in front.) Janet herself, though, didn’t appear until a version of “Scream,” her duet with Michael. She and a little and danced a litte.
And with a glare from Janet, that was that. Beyonce and Kanye were thrilled. J. Lo looked bored. We were underwhelmed We’ll update with any tributes to Michael from later in the show.
